Admission Information

Please submit an up-to-date resume highlighting your educational and professional background. There are several ways you can do this:

Please write a concise essay for each of the following four questions. If you’re a Dual Degree applicant, you should address goals for both the ETIM program and the particular engineering program you’re interested in pursuing:

1. Other than reputation, what most interests you about attending this graduate program in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University?
2. What are your goals after you complete your degree, and how will our graduate program help you achieve your immediate and longer-term future career objectives?
3. What specific research is of interest to you and how would our program enable you to pursue your goals?
4. Describe how your work, research, educational or other life experiences have prepared you for graduate study in this program?

You must submit official transcripts from your undergraduate institution(s) and any prior graduate work you’ve done.

For a transcript to be official, it must be sent to the ETIM admissions office by the university where your studies were completed.

If you’re currently enrolled in a degree program that you will not have completed when you submit your application, please submit your current transcript. Then, upon completion of your work, submit a final transcript.

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your transcript to the admissions office. An unofficial transcript can be submitted in several ways:

If you send unofficial transcripts with your application, we will review them. However, if you’re offered admission, you will need to produce official transcripts prior to enrollment.

For the ETIM program, you must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) administered by ETS. For your GRE score report to be official, it must be sent to the ETIM graduate admissions office by ETS.

The GRE codes for ETIM are:

• 1699 (department)
• 2074 (institution)

You may expedite your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your GRE scores to our admissions office. You can do this by:

You’re required to submit three letters of recommendation.

Typically, letters are written by professors or work supervisors. At least one of your three recommendations must be from your professional experience and one from a professor at the educational institution you last attended.

Letters of recommendation and recommendation letter forms are submitted through the ETIM online application. If you choose this method, you must apply to the ETIM program with the online application.

Because of the accelerated nature of the ETIM program, it’s essential that students have a strong command of the English language.

ETIM will accept reports from TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo. ETIM will waive TOEFL requirement for students with a 3.0 GPA and undergraduate degree in the US.

ETIM accepts a Duolingo overall score of 105 or higher.

For your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report to be official, it must be sent to the ETIM graduate admissions office by ETS.

The ETIM program requires these minimum TOEFL scores:

• Total = 100
• Reading = 25
• Listening = 25
• Speaking = 25
• Writing = 25

These minimum scores indicate that an applicant has the fundamental building blocks needed for academic tasks and for continued language development once in the program.

Though the TOEFL test is preferred, the ETIM program will also accept official IELTS scores (International English Language Testing System).

The ETIM program requires these minimum IELTS scores:

• Total = 7
• Reading = 6
• Listening = 6
• Speaking = 6
• Writing = 6

• 2074 (institution)

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your TOEFL or IELTS scores to the admissions office.

International student applicants to the MS in ETIM degree program are eligible to apply for the STEM OPT extension.

The application fee to the Single Degree ETIM program is $65. You can pay this by:
