Because of the accelerated nature of the ETIM program, it’s essential that students have a strong command of the English language.
Typically, international and United States permanent resident applicants must take an English language proficiency exam. This is required as a component in determining academic success in the program and to support visa applications for admitted students studying on an F1 visa.
If an applicant’s native language is English, an English language proficiency test is not required if you meet one of the following criteria below:
- US Citizen
- Permanent Resident
- Citizenship in the United Kingdom or Canada
- Obtained a 4 year undergraduate at an US institution
- CMU student or alum
ETIM accepts a Duolingo overall score of 105 or higher.
For your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report to be official, it must be sent to the ETIM graduate admissions office by ETS.
The ETIM program requires a total minimum TOEFL score of 100.
These minimum scores indicate that an applicant has the fundamental building blocks needed for academic tasks and for continued language development once in the program.
Though the TOEFL test is preferred, the ETIM program will also accept official IELTS scores (International English Language Testing System).
The ETIM program requires these minimum IELTS scores:
- Total = 7
- Reading = 6
- Listening = 6
- Speaking = 6
- Writing = 6
The TOEFL and IELTS codes for ETIM are:
- 69 (department)
- 2074 (institution)
You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your TOEFL or IELTS scores to the admissions office.
An unofficial score report can be submitted by:
- Uploading an electronic copy through the online application
- Emailing it to: etim@andrew.cmu.edu
- Mailing it to:
